Blame it on the water cooler.
That’s where Tom Drake, principal of The Drake Group, first learned about the lure of Union Pier.
Spotting a friend at the water cooler on a Monday morning, he asked him how he spent his weekend. “Another beautiful weekend at the beach house” he replied.
“How can you spend every weekend there?”
“Why don’t you come over next weekend and find out?”.
The offer was accepted and the hook was set.
Once Drake crossed the state line, he felt his shoulders relax.
The sky seemed a little bit brighter.
The wind seemed a little bit fresher.
Time moved a little bit slower.
People seemed to smile a lot more.
He felt like he was much farther away than 70 miles from Chicago. He came back refreshed and understood why his friend felt like he was on vacation every weekend he was at his beach house.
This was life as it was supposed to be.
Shortly thereafter, Drake bought his own little get away.
